Steering rack

Steering racks are part of the rack and pinion system of steering the car. Part of the rack contains a cylinder with a piston in the middle. The piston is connected to the rack. There are two fluid ports, one on either side of the piston.

Many modern cars use rack and pinion steering mechanisms, where the steering wheel turns the pinion gear; the pinion moves the rack, which is a linear gear that meshes with the pinion, converting circular motion into a linear side-to-side motion. This motion applies steering torque to the kingpins of the wheels via tie rods and a short lever arm called the steering arm.
