A brake servo is a part used in the braking system of a car, it helps the driver to brake by increasing the braking effort, and is used in nearly all vehicles that use hydraulic brakes. The brake servo uses a stored vacuum to multiply the braking force applied by the driver to the brake pedal, before applying the multiplied force to the brake master cylinder. The manifold vacuum is used in petrol engines, but in diesel engines, a separate vacuum pump is used. The vacuum is transferred to the servo along semi-rigid plastic lines, and is stored in the servo by using a non-return valve.
