Catalytic converter

A catalytic converter is a car part which is used to reduce the toxicity of automobile engine emissions. Modern catalytic convertors have 3 main functions.

• Carbon monoxide is turned into carbon dioxide
• Unburnt hydrocarbons (unburnt and partially-burnt fuel) are turned into carbon dioxide and water.
• The amount of nitrogen oxide is reduced and turned into nitrogen and oxygen.

Early catalytic converters performed the first 2 functions, but were replaced in the early 80s by 3 way catalytic convertors.
