Petrol tank

A petrol (or fuel) tank is a safe container for flammable liquids, and is part of a car engine system. As the name suggests, petrol tanks store petrol which is stored and propelled by a fuel pump, or released by pressurized gas into an engine.

Fuel tanks are increasingly made using Plastic High density polyethylene (HDPE), which is made using a technique of blow moulding. This technology is increasingly used as it now shows its capacity to obtain very low emissions of fuel. HDPE is a flexible material, which can also allow for complex shapes to be formed, this means the fuel tank can be mounted directly over the rear axle, saving space and improving crash safety. Initially there were concerns over the low fracture toughness of HDPE, when compared to steel or aluminium, but it is becoming increasingly adopted as the material of choice for fuel tanks.
