Gear boxes, why do we need them ? Well - engines typically work at between 600 and 7000 revs per minute. Wheels rotate at between 0 and 1800 revs per minute. Because of the difference in the speed of an engine, and the speed of a wheel, a gear box is needed to sit between the two to translate engine speed to wheel speed.

Engines have narrow revs per minute ranges for maximum horsepower and torque. For example, an engine might produce its maximum horsepower at 5,500 rpm. The gear box, or transmission in USA, allows the gear ratio between engine and drive wheels to change as the car speeds up and slows down. When driving a car, you shift gears so the engine can stay close to its most efficient performance level at most speeds.
